Hosts Holland see off England to keep Euro dream alive

Mandy Van Den Berg’s Holland are through to the final of the 2017 European Championships final after comfortably beating England in the semi-final.

England were knocked out of the European Championships last night after losing 3-0 against hosts the Netherlands at De Grolsch Veste in Enschede. Reading’s Jade Moore started for Sampson’s Lionesses, with teammates Jo Potter and Mandy Van Den Berg (Holland) on the bench.

The Netherlands took the lead in the 22nd minute through Vivianne Miedema’s well placed header, and the Lionesses responded well and created a number of chances to equalise just minutes later. Royals academy product Fran Kirby fired over before Jade Moore had what turned out to be England’s closest effort on goal, her powerful header was deflected onto the post in the closing stages of the second half.

Holland then doubled their lead in the 62nd minute when Danielle van de Donk capitalised on a defensive error to poke the ball past Siobhan Chamberlain, the Liverpool keeper coming in for the injured Karen Bardsley. Ellen White then came close to getting a goal back, but saw her lob drift narrowly past van Veenendaal’s post. Then a moment of slight controversy when referee Stephanie Frappart dismissed a penalty shout after Lucy Bronze was brought down in the box, replays clearly showing contact was made on the full-back.

England’s Jodie Taylor then had a chance late on but fired straight at the Dutch keeper, before Barcelona’s Toni Duggan had an effort cleared off the line in the seconds from time. The hosts made sure of their victory with the last kick of the game when Lieke Martens' shot flew in after deflecting off of Millie Bright.
