Royals Abroad: Three senior Lionesses a first for club
With the Spring Series complete, eight of our first team players have met up with their respective nations.
For the first time ever, three Reading Women players have met up for international duty with the England seniors. PFA team of the year keeper Mary Earps was yesterday named in Mark Sampson’s pre-Euro’s squad as a 4th training goalkeeper, and the 24-year old shot stopper joined new additions Jo Potter and Jade Moore for the camp. Moore & Potter were named in Sampson’s final Euro squad on the 3rd April, exactly four weeks prior to the ex-Notts County duo signing for the Royals. On announcement of Earps’ selection Sampson said: “Mary will be a positive addition to the group both in the training field and around the camp. She has had a fantastic six months, a period in which we have seen her mature into an outstanding goalkeeper. This will be an invaluable experience for her to take her forward in the future.”
The trio met up with the squad on Monday, prior facing Switzerland away at the Tissot Arena in Biel this Saturday (10 June, 5.15pm BST KO). The Lionesses will get a week’s rest bite after this, before meeting up again at St. George’s Park on Sunday 18th June. An intense three weeks will follow including a friendly against Denmark in Copenhagen on July 1st, proceeded by a week’s hot weather training in Valencia, Spain.
Molly Bartrip will also wear the England shirt over the next two weeks as she heads to Sweden with the U23s for the Nordic Tournament. The young Lionesses will face the hosts later today at 6pm, before going on to play the USA on Friday night (6pm KO), and Norway on Monday (12th) evening. Bartrip, who celebrated her 21st birthday earlier this week, will travel back to the UK on Tuesday (13th).
It promises to be a big summer for Dutch captain Mandy Van Den Berg, who will see her country host the 2017 European championships. The 26-year old centre half met up with her ‘OranjeLeeuwinnen’ team mates yesterday for the start of their Euro preparations. Van Den Berg will lead her team against Japan this Friday (kick off 18:30, Rat Verlegh Stadion) and Austria next Tuesday (kick off 20:45, Stadion De Adelaarshorst).
Melissa Fletcher & Charlie Estcourt met up with their Welsh teammates yesterday also, and have taken part in a training session at Slough Town FC earlier this morning (Tuesday 6th). The pair will fly to Porto this evening prior to facing Portugal on Thursday at 16:00BST at Stadium João Cardoso in Tondela. Wales will face Portugal for a second time on Sunday (11th) at 11:00am, before flying back to the UK that evening. Jayne Ludlow had selected Rachel Rowe for the camp, however the adaptable midfielder was unfortunately forced to pull out of the camp due to injury.
REPUBLIC OF IRELAND:
Defender Harriett Scott travelled to Dunboyne Castle yesterday to meet up with her teammates ahead of the Republic of Ireland’s friendly against Iceland this Thursday (8th June), kick off 7:30pm, taking place at Dublin’s Tallaght Stadium. The 24-year old will be free to travel back to Berkshire on Friday.
